What Foothold is
One low-barrier place for help and work. No fees. No false promises.
Foothold Reading is a free, AI-guided helper for Reading residents, immigrants and neighbors without stable housing. Tell it what you need in plain words and it routes you to verified free food, shelter, clothing and services.
It also points to legitimate paid local work. Directories give you a list and gig apps give you a feed. Foothold puts help and work in one place and tells you plainly what it can and cannot do.
How it works
From what you need to what to do next.
Built for a phone screen, a low battery and a tired day.
-
You say it
Tell us what you need, your way
Type or write in plain words, in English or Spanish. No forms with twenty boxes, no phone tree. A line like I need a meal tonight is enough.
-
We route it
Your request goes to the right place
The AI matches what you wrote to verified free food, shelter, clothing and services, or to paid work like cleaning, moving and yardwork.
-
You decide
You choose what to do next
You get clear next steps, not a wall of listings. Nothing is charged for asking, and nobody is promised a job that is not real.
-
We keep growing
The network gets stronger
We are adding verified resources and local employers, partner-funded or donor-supported, so more real options show up over time.
What you get
Three things, all without a fee.
Help for today
Free food, shelter, clothing
Verified places and services in and around Reading, matched to what you actually asked for. Requesting help is always free.
Work for tomorrow
Cleaning, moving, yardwork
Legitimate paid local gigs, shown honestly. We list real opportunities, and we do not guarantee placements.
A guide in your language
Plain words, English and Spanish
Immigrants, Spanish-speaking families and anyone short on time and data can ask in their own words and get a clear answer.
Looking for help should not be a second job.
The usual way
- Long directories you have to sort through yourself
- Phone trees and hold music
- Help in one place, jobs in another app
- Fees, sign-up walls and big promises
With Foothold
- Say what you need in a sentence
- Written for a phone and a low data plan
- Free help and paid work side by side
- Free to ask. Honest about what we cannot promise.
Why this exists
Help and a paycheck belong in the same conversation.
We started Foothold because the people we want to serve in Reading are the ones the usual systems wear out: neighbors without stable housing, families new to the country, people between jobs with a phone and not much data.
They do not need another list. They need a place to say what is going on and get pointed somewhere real. Some days that is a meal or a bed. Other days it is a few hours of paid work that moves things forward.
So we are building it that way: free to ask, plain about what we can do, and only legitimate work. We are still growing the network of verified resources and local employers, and we would rather tell you that than overpromise.
Questions, answered plainly
Before you ask, you might wonder.
Does it cost anything to ask for help?
No. Requests for help are free, and there is no payment barrier to asking.
Will you find me a job?
We show you legitimate paid local work like cleaning, moving and yardwork. We do not guarantee placements and we do not offer instant financial aid.
Can I write in Spanish?
Yes. Tell us what you need in your own words and in your own language.
Is this a replacement for 211, 911 or 988?
No. If you are in danger, call 911. For local services you can call or text 211, and 988 is there in a crisis. Foothold is another way to find help and work in Reading.
Who is Foothold for?
Reading residents, immigrants, people without stable housing, and low-income neighbors who need food, shelter, clothing, services or short-term paid work.
I run a business or nonprofit. Can I help?
Yes. We are growing our network of verified resources and legitimate employers. Use the form below and tell us how you would like to help.
